Over the weekend of 21st July 2024, Wireless Planet (WP) set up a Starlink network at its Kinangop Hub. This setup is a start of the future planned initiatives to formally launch the Kinangop Digital Hub as a facility that can foster technology innovation and entrepreneurship within Nyandarua County.

Working in collaboration with N50, Njabini Cooperatives and other partners, the Digital Hub targets to provide a collaborative environment that entrepreneurs, makers and innovators can use to develop their ideas and digital solutions to address the digital gap in Nyandarua. The hub also targets to support development of digital skills within Nyandarua and the neighbouring counties as well as serve as an environment that can expose children to the digital space while also having a place they can study at as a community library.

The launch of the Starlink network comes at a time when Wireless Planet, an N50 partner, is closely working with the Geeks Without Frontiers (GWF) – the N50 Project Management Office (PMO)- to investigate community-centred / women-centric models that can ensure digital inclusion for women. A further focus of the investigation is to evaluate metrics of “meaningful and affordable” access by looking at multiple generations of mobile connectivity (3G/4G/5G) and Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite technology featuring the use of web and mobile-based applications for Agriculture, healthcare among other sectors. The applications are being used as a basis of understanding the value they can create or leapfrog digital opportunity for women and girls.
